Irish Oaks Betting Guide
First run in 1895, the Darley Irish Oaks is a Group 1 horse race for three-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run over 1 mile, 4 furlongs. Along with the other Irish classic races, the Irish Oaks is run annually at the Curragh Racecourse and is one of the highlights of the Irish flat racing season.
Irish Oaks Results
The Irish Oaks, sponsored by Darley, was raced on 13 July at the Curragh Racecourse and saw yet another victory for the highly successful partnership between Irish jockey Johnny Murtagh and Ballydoyle trainer Aidan O’Brien.
Moonstone gave a brilliant effort in the nail biting head-to-head struggle toward the finish line against her underdog stablemate Ice Queen (66 - 1), ridden by Colm O’ Donoghue. The victory marked Aidan O’Brien’s third consecutive win at the Irish Oaks and 13th Group 1 win for the season. It was also a proud day Moonstone - the marker leader took down her first career win.
The total prize fund for the 2008 Darley Irish Oaks was €500,000. Other notable races on that day included two Group 3 races – the Emirates Airline Minstrel Stakes and the Dubai Duty Free Anglesey Stakes – and the Listed Kilboy Estate Stakes.
Irish Oaks Winners Peeping Fawn
The 2007 Irish Oaks saw Peeping Fawn, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Johnny Murtagh, come in ahead of runner-up Light Shift by a healthy 3½ lengths. With several Group 1 wins, 2007 was a good year for Peeping Fawn and a spectacular one for Aidan O’Brien. The Irish race horse trainer emerged as the top flat racing trainer for 2007, with total prize money earnings in excess of €5 million.
